Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Remote High Mountain Lake Food Web in the Central Pyrenees

چکیده
Brown trouts (Salmo trutta) from four European high mountain lakes (Norway, the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Tatras) were analyzed for metal and organic pollution, histopathologicalabnormalities and biochemical parameters. Fish from all lakes appeared well nourished withconditioning factors close to unity. Their mean age ranged from 4 to 14 years old inGossenköllesee and Vel’ké Hincovo, respectively. Lead and cadmium concentrations werehigher in fish from Vel’ké Hincovo in comparison with the other studied lakes. All fishpresented similar and lower mercury levels in muscle. While organochlorine compoundsconcentrations are consistent with the pattern observed in the sediments and water of the lakes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in liver do not correlate with what is found in thesediments. All fish presented similar PAH concentration in liver. Higher numbers ofmelanomacrophages and increased amounts of lipid degradation and degeneration in liver werefound in trouts from Vel’ké Hincovo and Øvre Neådalsvatn. Signs of oxidative stress, such aselevated concentrations of glutathione disulphide (GSSG) and G6PDH, were also detected inspecimens of these two lakes. This metabolic activation probably due to higher detoxifyingactivity was corroborated with previous findings of elevated number of PAH metabolites in bileof fish from these two locations.

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in remote European and Atlantic sites located above the boundary mixing layer.
BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE Ambient air concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined at five elevated mountain sites on the European continent and the Atlantic Ocean. All sites can be considered remote background areas since they are situated above the timberline and they lack local emission sources of these compounds. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Average gas phase concent...
متن کاملPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon composition in soils and sediments of high altitude lakes.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in lake sediments and nearby soils of two European high mountain regions, Pyrenees and Tatra, have been studied. Similar mixtures of parent PAH were observed in all cases, indicating predominance of airborne transported combustion products. Nevertheless, the composition of these atmospherically long-range transported PAH was better preserved in the superfi...
متن کاملEstrogenic activity in sediments from European mountain lakes.
Superficial and bottom sediment samples from 83 European mountain lakes, ranging from Norway to the Pyrenees and East Europe, were tested for estrogenic compounds by the recombinant yeast assay. The results showed widespread potential estrogenic activity arriving at remote lakes. Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) and Scotland Highlands were the regions with the highest prevalence of lakes with high es...
متن کاملPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fish from remote and high mountain lakes in Europe and Greenland.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed in liver of fifty-seven individual trout distributed among seven high mountain lakes in Europe and one remote lake in Greenland. In all cases, very similar distributions were observed in which phenanthrene largely predominated and fluoranthene and pyrene were the second major compounds. These distributions were similar to those observed in t...
متن کاملPhysiological response to persistent organic pollutants in fish from mountain lakes: analysis of CYP1A gene expression in natural populations of Salmo trutta.
Cytochrome p450 1A (CYP1A) gene expression in fish liver increases upon exposure to a variety of chemical compounds, including organochlorine compounds (OCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To use this physiological response as a marker of environmental impact, we developed and validated a set of primers to quantify CYP1A expression by qRT-PCR in the brown trout, Salmo trutta. Thes...
